Meaning of the elements in general
The wood element
The element wood is referred to as "Mu" in Traditional Chinese Science (TCW). Wood stands for growth, expansion and upward movement. It is associated with spring, the east, the wind and the color green. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), wood represents the functional cycle of the liver and gallbladder and is associated with qualities such as creativity, flexibility and determination.

Alongside fire, earth, metal and water, wood is one of the 5 elements/phases of transformation. The character mù / wood symbolizes a growing plant with roots that breaks through the ground.
Wood is characterized by constant growth. It represents living nature, but combines a number of contradictions. The trunk of a tree appears hard, rigid and immobile, while the branches and leaves that expand towards the light reflect something dynamic, flexible and mobile. This in turn symbolizes the determination needed to achieve goals. In autumn, the tree sacrifices part of its substance each year in order to overcome the hardships of winter and blossom again with new strength in spring. Yang wood symbolizes the trunk and root of a tree, while yin wood symbolizes the fine branches, twigs and leaves. While yang wood represents something rigid and heavy and stands for permanence, yin wood is dynamic, flexible and moving and stands for change. Everything that works through vegetation can be assigned to wood. The transformation phase wood is friends with water, because water rises in the tree and nourishes it. Wood has an inner drive and is therefore the symbol for motivation and creativity, which may appear very confused but nevertheless follows a structure.

Find out more about the individual elements
The balance and harmonious interaction of the five elements are crucial for maintaining health and well-being in TCM. An imbalance or blockage in the wood element can lead to health problems, especially related to liver and gallbladder functions. Therefore, the goal of TCM is to keep the five elements in the body in a harmonious balance to promote optimal health and vitality.
The five elements wood, fire, earth, metal and water are thus the expression of the five phases of change, which are primarily used to describe energy states. However, this is not a description of rigid states, but of phases that merge into each other and produce each other cyclically, which are constantly in motion and influence each other.
As the five elements are a cyclical sequence, each element is assigned a time of day and a season. Each element also has yin and yang components. Certain properties are reflected in the individual elements. In geomancy (feng shui), for example, the five elements are assigned different shapes, colors, directions, seasons, states, etc. In Bazi Suanming, on the other hand, the principles of action of the 5 phases of transformation are mainly considered in their cyclical sequence and effect.
The element wood symbolizes the ability to develop and unfold potential. It is associated with qualities such as creativity, flexibility, determination, initiative and assertiveness. People with a strong wood element are often enthusiastic, ambitious and decisive.
The element wood in the context of Feng Shui is also described as follows:
Quality
Wood denotes growth and expansion. Like the seed that bursts open in spring, this element also stands for new beginnings and the initial stage of an undertaking. From the seed, a shoot then strives upwards towards the light. This branches out and expands in all directions. This growth energy is characteristic of the wood element.
Time
In terms of the time of day, the wood represents dawn and mid-morning.
In terms of the season, the wood symbolizes spring.
Yin & Yang
The yin aspect of a tree is represented by the branches and fine twigs and leaves that grow towards the light. They are flexible and move strongly.
The trunk and roots correspond to the yang aspect. They are connected to the earth and seemingly immobile.
Shape
The wood element is characterized by elongated, soaring shapes. In nature, this corresponds to wooded areas; in the city, it is more like telephone poles, towers and skyscrapers. Plants clearly symbolize the growth tendency of this element.
Colors
The wood element is assigned the color green.
Materials
The material of the wood element has grown naturally. For example, you can emphasize the wood element in the room with plants or solid wood furniture.
